Kan, my own views are as follows: 1. this email discussion group, as it stands now, is a good ancillary forum to what existed previously, 2. the email discussion group provides a stable forum that enthusiasts can join, 3. a main difference between an email discussion group and a newsgroup is that the email correspondence is "in your face" with individuals who are voluntarily and constantly plugged-in, whereas a newsgroup can be neglected for months at a time, 4. a good way to kill an email discussion group for core enthusiasts is to have it swell in size and get overloaded by the volume of correspondence ... it can deteriorate into petty items and correspondence that is generated just for the sake of getting people to respond ... and people will unsubscribe simply to stop the volume of email ... and instead periodically monitor a newsgroup, or just unplug all together. 5. I see nothing wrong (in fact it is a good thing) regarding the footnote that you are proposing in order to let individuals know about the existence of the email group so that enthusiasts can plug in; I think the issue of "independence" should be a non-issue and there doesn't seem to a need to label the discussion group as pixielab-sponsored versus yahoo-sponsored, etc. 7. I understand your concerns about allocating your time to monitoring and responding to an email group that has such a small audience but it seems to me that it: a) you can make it clear that you will not respond to everything and will defer to other individuals with experience to deal with the sometimes repetitive items (and/or just refer to the info on your web site) b) the email group just helps to generate some new ideas, c) it is better than dealing with 1-on-1 email correspondence that is not part of a forum, d) it gives you a potential sounding board if you need one, e) you (or others) can always transfer substantial correspondence items to whatever larger audience forum is available (eg. a newsgroup or the website), 8. it seems better to not to criticize "lurkers" since they are a non-cost item and it adds to the distribution of information without creating excess volumes of email and over time many of those individuals will provide good insights; it is better if people respond selectively rather than everyone clambering to be heard. 9. This email groups seems like a good thing and maybe it's okay to just let it be what it is without expressing too much frustration with its limitations. Even if an email group becomes dormant for awhile, my impression is that it won't die the same way that a newsgroup does (as noted above, with a newsgroup you have to be interested enough to keep checking on it, whereas we are constantly plugged into the email connection even if it becomes dormant for awhile). Sorry that my comments were quite lengthy, and thanks again for making xxcopy available Kan ! ...Dan ===================================== ----- Original Message ----- From: Kan Yabumoto To: Sent: Saturday, May 19, 2001 1:10 PM Subject: [xxcopy] A thought about this group. > > Hello, Jim (the Moderator) and other group members: > > A new test version we are now working on has the following > text at the end of the /HELP text. > > -------------------------------------------------------------------- > Yahoo! sponsors a group dedicated for the discussion of XXCOPY. > It is supported by XXCOPY enthusiasts.
