For those who are not familiar with DATMAN, here's a background info. Dwayne has been a long time customer with DATMAN, Pixelab's tape backup product. XXCOPY has been distributed with the DATMAN package by the name, DCOPY/DCOPY32. The predecessor of XXCOPY started as a replacement of XCOPY for Novell's NetWare (can you believe it took years for Microsoft to topple Novell from their glory?) users. DATMAN is an interesting piece of software which assigns a drive letter to a tape (we support only the DAT tape (4mm) and 8mm tapes) drive which allows an ordinary file-access program such as XCOPY to do the backup job from batch files unlike typical tape backup software (which does all the tape access but won't let you use any other programs to access the files on tape). Anyway, to make the long story short, the only extra feature that DCOPY supported in addition to the standard switches of XCOPY was the /C switch which allows the program to continue after encountering the dreadful "A(bort), or R(etry)?" prompt. At that time, XCOPY did not give you the third option of F(ail) which allows the program to give up on accessing the problematic file and move on rather than the only practical choice of aborting the system backup. That was the motivation for our creation of DCOPY, and one thing led to another... ---------------------- Here's the answer to DATMAN users. If you are a paid DATMAN licensee, we will send you an XXCOPY License file (customized for each user). That is, you will be dealing with the XXCOPY Pro Edition. We will give you just one License file which will be good for your entire network. It's a site license. When you receive the XXCOPY.LIC file (we normally send it as a ZIP file which is attached to an Email, you will unzip it and save it in the same directory as your XXCOPY.EXE file. By the way, the filenames of the executable programs inside the XXCOPY Freeware package and the XXCOPY Pro Edition package are all the same. That is, we will now have XXCOPY.EXE which could be either the Pro Edition or Freeware. The banner line shown when invoked will identify which version of XXCOPY you are running. It will be a minor hassle from time to time to deal with two distinct programs which share the same name. But, to treat them differently will be even worse nightmare for documentation purposes because they are essentially the same. One thing in our favor is that XXCOPY is still a relatively simple program (unlike other monstrous Windows program packages) with minimum hassle in its setup. You can rename the executable program if you wish without any adverse consequences. For example, you may keep both the XXCOPY Freeware and XXCOPY Pro in the same machine. It will be your responsibility to rename the files. For example, you may rename the freeware version as XXCOPYFW.EXE. Or, XXFW2560.EXE to encode the version number (that's how we do it in our labs).
