Hi, All: As I have promised to you all in the XXCOPY discussion group, you are the first one to hear the announcement for a new releases of XXCOPY. It has been a very long time since our last update was released --- Just a few months feel like an eternity for XXCOPY!!! Since we always play conservative, the new version will be given to our preferred users: the friendly audience in this discussion group! Anyway, the new beta version, V 2.56.0 is here. The beta version release and its documentation is at: http://www.xxcopy.com/betatest/ -------------------------------------------------- Note: that our previous beta test directory, http://www.xxcopy.com/xxcopy/betatest/ no longer show any beta test material. That is because in influential web site has been promoting the betatest site as if it were our official release URL which is wrong. But, we do not want unsuspecting visitors to grab the beta version for his/her first XXCOPY experience. Therefore, will have given up using the URL for anything new ----------------------------------------------------- =============================================================== The major news of this release is the introduction of XXCOPY-PRO in addition to XXCOPY Freeware. In a sense, XXCOPY Freeware as you know it will no longer be the most powerful file management tool. ------------------------------------------------------- The XXCOPY Pro Edition will be our flagship product. ------------------------------------------------------- So, we now have two versions: XXCOPY Freeware (xxcopyfw) XXCOPY Pro Edition (xxcopype) The corresponding download entry points in our web site are: Freeware: http://www.xxcopy.com/betatest/index.html#tag_04 Pro Edition: http://www.xxcopy.com/betatest/index.html#tag_06 Although downloading the Freeware package is hassle-free with just a mouse click, the Pro Edition is available for a 60-day evaluation (no obligation for purchase) which asks you to fill out the Test-Drive request form. Since the Test-Drive uses the same executable program as what paid licensees receive, the download package is encrypted with a password (which will be delivered to you in Email). If you are a licensed XXCOPY user (with the license file, XXCOPY.LIC), proceed with the Test-Drive form. When you install the XXCOPY-PRO package, make sure to copy the license file into the same directory as the new XXCOPY.EXE file. If you have been using XXCOPY as part of your job in your company, this is the time to start your test drive. After the 60-day period, you may remain being a Freeware user. We figure if you are unwilling to become a paid licensee, there is little we can do to change your mind. ============================================================= Undoubtedly, the first question that comes to your mind is: "What is the difference in the two packages?" In short, the major distinction is drawn by your computer's operating environment: whether the XXCOPY accesses files within the same machine (local drives), or remote files on networked computers. The freeware version will still perform all XXCOPY-Pro features in basically the same way except that the Pro-only features will generate an extra user prompt in the Freeware which will might become an obstacle for unattended batch file operations. If you are not sure which one to select, stay with the Freeware version for now. You can always switch to the Pro Edition when you find out the Pro Edition is for you after some usage. For more details, I will post articles elaborating on the topic of Freeware vs. Pro Edition, shortly. Also, the new version comes with a lot of new features over the current official release version (v2.44.4). Of course, we put numerous bug fixes. Separate posts are in order for this subject. ------------------------------------------------------------- Just remember, when you post a question regarding the new version, or report bugs, please make sure that you mention the version number (which may change rather rapidly). Cheers, Kan Yabumoto
