OK. Now, I think I know how the "Yahoo Groups" work. I did some experiments with the Yahoo Groups. Harsha was right on the fact that you can subscribe to the XXCOPY group without registering to Yahoo. Subscribing the mailing list is one way to become a member of the group (at least to become a "half-member" --- see below). While there seems to be no way to become a group member without first registering to Yahoo (acquiring the Yahoo ID, selecting the password and providing your Email address) at the Yahoo Groups site, you may become a group member (such as the XXCOPY group), by sending an Email. The trouble I had was that the Email address Harsha gave us was wrong. We all have to be alert on the confusing domain name with the Yahoo Groups. It's not @yahoo.com. The correct address to subscribe the XXCOPY mailing is xxcopy-subscribe@yahoogroups.com Be careful on the domain name here. The question is, by sending the Email and not becoming a Yahoo registered member, are you a member of the group? Yes from the standpoint of being in the membership list. (a "registered" member can click the Members menu at the left hand side of the XXCOPY group home page and see Harsha's name who is not a "real" member). But, this "membership" to the group is only to be able to receive, post messages in the group's mailing list. However, since the File-access and even the browsing privileges for the membership list are tied to the log-on process and the email-only members do not get. Therefore, it seems only a "half-membership". -------------------------------------- Last night, I found out that about 30% of the membership is for email-only. Since it is rather significant, I just changed the access right for the files to be open to the public. This way, Harsha (and anybody else can enter the Files page for download). BTW, I also edited the Email control template a little as the moderator. Now, the emails you receive do not have the "how-to-unsubscribe" lines. I thought it was just too annoying (especially when posters forget to remove the few lines near the bottom before replying to a message). Alas, the very last line you see in the bottom of this Email (if you are viewing this message by Email) cannot be eliminated (the line which reminds you with Yahoo Group's usage terms) --- the lawyer always has the final word :-( Kan Yabumoto =============================================================== At 2001-06-13 08:47, Harsha Godavari wrote: >Kan: > All I know is that I receive postings from this list (and I have never >used either an elias or redirection, therfore I am subscribed to this list >on Yahoo) and when I tried to download the file, "OOPs you are not registerd >to Yahoo" message came up. > >Regards >Harsha Godavari =====================================================================
