My guess is that your primary drive is an IDE and the clone is a SCSI.

Not having had a SCSI HDD I can't say with certainty, but there may be an
option to boot from your SCSI device in your BIOS, if your SCSI card supports
bootable devices - or your SCSI BIOS has this facility built in.

On rereading your msg, you state that computer would not boot. How did you
rearrange your drives after cloning to the external SCSI drive?
