Let me add to what Barry said. In Win9x, when you see the Cloud, it is Microsoft's trick to hide the underlying DOS activities. You can turn off the Cloud's display and keep the DOS screen (sometimes it shows other pertinent error message which users normally miss because of the Cloud display). To do so, Go to the editor (in DOS) and modify the MSDOS.SYS file (an ascii file with hidden/readonly/system flags set so you need to run ATTRIB -H -R -S C:\MSDOS.SYS Inside MSDOS.SYS, set logo=0 (to remove the logo display) Just by setting the logo=0 you may see a bunch of error message on the screen. Also, inside MSDOS.SYS set BootMenu=1 BootMenuDelay=10 This will give you the 10-second menu display where you may choose a non-standard option such as Step-by-step-confirmation, Safe-Mode, Command Prompt-Only, etc. If you see only one-line MSDOS.SYS file, let me know you need a much bigger MSDOS.SYS file for a system disk on a hard disk. Also, the activation of BOOTLOG.TXT file may also help you determine which device driver fails.
