Hi Tom, I'll copy our comments to the xxcopy group because it is an important item that one of the current limitations with xxcopy is that it does not by itself allow for effective backup of Win95-98 etc operating systems and applications to CDRs (nor CDRWs). In fact, on a stand-alone basis it is recommended that a switch be used to turn off the LFN/SFN data retention when xxcopying to CDRs so that the process does not take an inordinately long time for no effective result. If you scan prior correspondence in this group for the subject of backup to CDRs you'll see discussion of the supplementary role of DOSLFNBK. The problem is not the long file names themselves but retaining the one-to-one correspondence with the short file names that are still an essential element within the operating system. Kan has a tech note that specifically addresses the issue of LFNs and SFNs and, as he mentioned, is anticipating future enhancements for xxcopy. I thought that XXCOPY took care of all the LFN issues. My plan of action was to backup everything to CD-RWs using XXCOPY. Then if disaster struck, I would use my Win98 boot disk which has CD support on it to restore my system and files. I beleive this type of boot is into a 32 bit environment but maybe thats where I was wrong. I'd sure like to hear your thoughts on this.
