Random, I guess I'm a bit disappointed that you are not addressing this issue with Kan outside of this email group. In fact you seem to have decided to just ignore Kan's initial reluctance and are willing to just bypass him. What is the huge rush? You did not develop xxcopy and I think Kan deserves a bit more respect for the work he has done, and the way in which he has developed the user community. I'll give you a quasi-analogy where someone, like Kan, has spent years developing, documenting and interactively communicating a complex product that has benefited many people, and then as he prepares to refine it further with a more user-friendly packaging, you step on to the stage and want to unilaterally (despite your comments) develop the packaging ASAP with little or no coordination with Kan. You seem to be treating this as your own user group. Your second memo gave me a favourable impression, but now I wonder about your actions. I'd suggest you work a bit more cooperatively with Kan and perhaps Kan could contact you off-line. I'd prefer the two of you to sort this out ... and we don't need a product by the end of this week. I would suggest that you develop a prototype in joint discussions with Kan, and then jointly involve the user group once you have an initial approach. I agree that such an approach might dilute the issue of authorship regarding the GUI, and it may take one or two weeks more to expose it to the user group, but xxcopy is Kan's creation and the GUI is just the packaging. If this starts off on the right foot, cooperatively, it can be a win-win situation. My impression is that you have something of value to add, but why not do it recognizing that in many ways we are guests in the xxcopy household. I'm more comfortable when guests don't try to take control of the household. My guess is that you became impatient when Kan, understandably, identified his reluctance in jumping right into a collaborative effort, but I hope you will reconsider and take some time to try to work with Kan. If it's a no-mix oil and water situation then I guess you may choose to act as you choose.
