I have always followed the "back up to more than one media" rule, and that philosophy has saved me more than once. Most of my backups are done to: 1: another hard drive on the same machine 2: CD-RW 3: USB hard drive In addition, I use xxcopy to clone/copy data, as well as Windows native Backup applet which has always proven reliable for me. This may sound like a lot of work, but using Windows 98 scheduler, it gets done automatically. The next trick is to keep the backups (or a copy of the backups) at a different site, in case of theft or fire. The car trunk is a good location, believe it or not. Place the media in a small insulated lunch carrier to protect from heat. The new, small, USB or Firewire hard drives beat the heck out of any other media for backups in my opinion. They hot-swap and are easy to move around. Hope this helps. -michael goodrich Tucson, Az -----=====------- --- In xxcopy@y..., mevans2@e... wrote: > This is NOT about xxcopy: it is about CDs. > > We use xxcopy to back up our data to CDs, but neither xxcopy nor any > other copy executable is the > culprit in the following problem. > > When a writable CD is closed (made readable by other CD drives), > files can be lost.
