Many thanks for the prompt and detailed responses: - Charles, my opening line was not clear, I wait until all has settled and appears to be functioning properly before running my first task of the day - the C:\ D:\ /clone job. If not, (only once so far) it's unplug the first disk (or change the BIOS if preferred) to start from my second hard disk, and back to yesterday! Kan, I have just acquired a cover disk version (W9x only) of a boot and partition application called Acronis OS Selector which claims to enable creation of multiple PRIMARY (active?) partitions on one disk and so permit selective booting into a second OS. This application also contains a ghost function for partition copying but I do not expect that it will magically cope with files in use (and I now KNOW that XXCOPY works and does other things). I had only considered using an "A" drive but I think a second minimal OS on the hard disk and your quick boot diskette should be the quickest way to clone before starting the day. I am sure your detailed missive will keep me occupied for a bit! The main group of "access denied" files when cloning an ME system is the restore set. To avoid these I tried disabling Restore but still have to use /X_RESTORE\ to speed up the re-cloning (I don't know enough to recognise the culprits individually or the consequences of deleting them). Sometimes there are a few other files associated with IE5 but nothing consistent or frequent enough to warrant using an exclusion. I understand WinXP also has a restore feature and so may experience similar delays. Thanks again for the advice. Regards, Bob Weir
