From: http://webopedia.internet.com/TERM/R/RAID.html "Short for Redundant Array of Independent (or Inexpensive) Disks, a category of disk drives that employ two or more drives in combination for fault tolerance and performance. RAID disk drives are used frequently on servers but aren't generally necessary for personal computers." In actual practice "independent" has less meaning. Jerk a "hot" disk out of a RAID 5 stack sometime and watch the fun! I did know an administrator who backed up a RAID system by swapping out drives with fresh formatted ones, one at a time. He would then wait for the new drive to be reconstructed and then do the next one. These days he would be better off with a M/O drive and XXCOPY or an 8mm tape drive and DATMAN. At least that way he could go home before the nightly news and see his kids when they are awake.
