Simon: Naturally, the floppy-based boot technique relies on a healthy state of essential Windows system files. Since a significant number of booting problems are from the files that are saved in the "quick boot diskette" described in XXTB #33, it is a viable "band aid" which works in a surprising number of occasions. If a corrupted file occur anything beyond the files that are kept in the quick boot diskette, like in your case, you just cannot expect it to work. To cover such cases requIres a huge "diskette" whose capacity equals *ALL* the essential files in the windows system directory which is beyond the scope of the scheme. If it were a FAT volume, it would have been as simple as booting in DOS (v.7.x --- possibly using the boot diskette for Win9X) and manually overwrite the corrupted file(s). In your case, with an NTFS volume, it is harder to access. One "official" way without resorting to third-party solutions is to use the recovery console (one should always install the recovery console on the hard disk (C:\cmdcons\) for such an occasion. If you don't have the "Recovery Console" option in the boot menu (i.e., you have not installed the recovery console on your hard disk), then, you must do the same thing using the WinXP Install CD. Follow the installation procedure and you will find a branching point where you can select the Recovery Console option. Once you enter the environment, it is just like a DOS environment with similar set of commands (such as CD, DIR, COPY, etc.). You should be able to copy/overwrite the corrupted file (USERENV.DLL) which had been copied into a floppy from a healthy system. Another (lengthy) option is to re-install XP on top of what you have which can preserve the settings but re-install corrupted files. Disclaimer: I have not done the procedure that I wrote in here. I described what I would do next from my (limited) experience. You do it on your own risk.
