It's hard to day. But, I imagine if some cluster (a collection of sectors which is treated as one allocation unit) is reserved by some software components for purposes other than part of a regular file, copying regular files would not touch the area, and therefore the answer is no for that particular cluster. On the other hand, if those sectors are marked "red" for a cluster which belong to a special file whatever that might be, then, as long as the file is readable by XXCOPY using the standard file I/O API method, the contents of the marked cluster will be successfully copied. Since I am not familiar with the exact criteria which is used for making it red, I cannot tell one way or the other.
