Sorry for not giving you an answer to the DirectCD-related question. No, your posting was perfectly legitimate and it was our fault not providing any response. I usually try to give a definitive answer after testing the situation (and hopefully pinpointing how to correct it). We often correct serious problems in a relatively short period of time after discovering a bug. But, for this problem, let me answer it without any further delay. Because, our attempt to investigate the situation has not been complete (and almost forgotten :-( Sorry about that). We found an entry on our "to-do" list on 2002-08-09 from someone with xxxx@g... address (could be you). I will put another entry in the list (that is, we are not forgetting the problem). Here's some more thoughts on this. * * * * * * * * * * Currently, we do not have a "working" DirectCD on any of our machines in our labs. We have had DirectCD on a computer with a CD-RW but due to the way DirectCD behaves, it gave us a lot of problems maintaining good working DirectCD. I suspect Roxio (Adaptec) designed the program in such a way to lure the user to upgrade to their "Deluxe" version. For instance, Roxio's web site lures us to proceed for downloading the latest version. So, we follow their direction, download their file, and let it install. After all that, the program declares that we have to "upgrade" to their Deluxe version. OK, we are not too crazy about paying for the Deluxe version because we believe the Deluxe version is simply a bloated version with more idiosyncrasies for the Easy CD package with apparently the same old DirectCD. Then, we will discover that the DirectCD which was working fine before the procedure stops working. It complains that some DLL is missing (or something). This seems almost criminal --- a working software was broken by their tool and when we refuse to pay for the upgrade, we end up having no working program. In the past, we have succeeded in re-installing the DirectCD package from the original CD on the machine. But, right now, we don't have a working DirectCD on the machine --- we repeatedly failed to install the DirectCD package and we just don't have time to continue spending our time to install and run our test. Once we have a working DirectCD, we probably can tell the mechanism of the XXCOPY failure and incorporate necessary work-arounds. Just we don't haven't got around (and new other urgent problems keep distracting us). If you sense our lack of enthusiasm on DirectCD, you are right. I remember, we had a lot more positive attitudes towards DirectCD... So, it sounds just a bunch of excuses. But, that's where it stands. We intend to "fix" the problem as soon as we have a working DirectCD. But, since we suspect the problems are most likely caused by the "irregular" behavior of DirectCD file system, our energy level on this problem is pretty low. One way or another, you may consider getting the InCD package from Ahead Software (InCD is bundled with their Nero software which has established a very solid reputation. In the long run, that will be the best solution for you. We have not heard problems of XXCOPY using InCD. Have you contacted Roxio for your problem by any chance?
