Assuming that this is not your boot drive, the "volume busy" can be caused by 
your DOS window's current directory is on that volume. (Even when that DOS 
Window is running the chkdsk. Dumb, but true). Moving to another drive and then 
specifying the volume, i.e. chkdsk f: from c: might spare you a reboot (as long 
as its not the boot volume).

I agree. My experience is that although folks blame virii for subtle program 
errors, they are not usually that subtle.

I'll leave that to Kan. Sounds very unusual. Maybe some sort of LFN confusion 
in the directory? If you use Explorer to copy the entire directory to another 
directory, does XXCOPY now have problems with _that_ directory's files?
