I haven't done a backup since the last time change, so I guess I shall have to check what dates are showing. You might get hold of Ralf Browns interrupt list and do a few direct DOS calls to see what shows up in the appropriate directory entry fields. Also try it both in a DOSbox on w98 and one of the NT flavors, and in raw DOS before booting w98. Direct disk access and examination of the raw directory entries might also be instructive, because then no Microsoft software will have had a change to 'correct' them. There are, I believe, at least two sets of directory access calls available, and possibly a third left over from FCB access times. One set comes with LFN support and is missing in the raw DOS mode. I think. BTW, the short name is not constructed dynamically - it is a separate directory entry made at file creation time. If you create the files with FILE_NUMERIC_TAILS (or something like that) shut off, then turn them on, the truncated name persists. At least in W95/8. -- Chuck F (cbfalconer@y...) (cbfalconer@w...)
