Dear Kan: (my name is Dave not doug) RE QUESTION ONE: Kan, your answer is too generic. You need to be more specific. I realize that your initial response and the documentation referred to unzipping the downloaded file into a temporary directory. I used the name of the temporary directory as 'temp' for the directory that I unzipped the xxfw2824.zip file downloaded from your web site. The full path is g:\atchmts\xxcopy\temp. It is within this directory, I ran the batch file install.bat and installed xxcopy.exe I used for my first two backups. I used the name of the temporary directory as 'temp2' for the directory that I unzipped the xxpe2827.zip file down loaded the other day and purchased a license for. The full path is g:\atchmts\xxcopy\temp2. I have also unzipped and placed xxcopy.lic into this same directory. The confusion on my part is the mention of the 'xxcopy home directory'. Xxcopy.exe currently exists in C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND as well as the two above directories. Is C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND the home directory or is G:\atchmts\xxcopy\temp the home directory. I suspect it is the entry on C: drive. Further, I can put each subsequent generation of xxcopy in a different temp? directory - making sure that all pe versions better have a copy of the license in the same directory I run the install.bat from. Am I right or not? The best way for installation is to unzip the downloaded file into a temporary directory, making the temporary directory the current, and run the INSTALL.BAT in it (equivalent to XXCOPY /INSTALL). The installation procedure will automatically rename existing XXCOPY-related files (old versions) before copying into the XXCOPY home directory. E.g., XXCOPY.EXE --> XX2824.EXE (v.2.82.4) XXCOPY16.EXE --> XX282416.EXE (v.2.28.4) This allows you to revert to any of the older versions when some features change in a non-backward compatible fashion. If you don't need this convenience, you can manually overwrite the xxcopy files in its home directory. You do not need any explicit invocation of /INSTALL. This is also true even when you acquire a new (upgraded) site license. While you can always run the standard /INSTALL procedure, all you need to do is actually to copy the newly issued license file (XXCOPY.LIC) into the home directory and XXCOPY will recognize the new one and make necessary change in the registry file (automatically, and transparently). In other words, XXCOPY will do a reasonable thing and you can do pretty much anything (or not to do anything special). >QUESTION TWO: > >The XXCOPY web site contains an enormous amount of documentation on the >XXCOPY product. Am I supposed to check each subject make a determination >as to whether or not I nee that information or can I simple download a >zipped version of the whole thing and let me make my determination what I >want and/or do not want off line. Hense, with the dynamic nature of this >product, when a revision comes along then do I have to down load the whole >thing all over and over again? We put the date on the documentation. When the contents are revised, we put newer date to the article (We fix minor typo errors without revising the article date), so that you get the idea of whether you should read the documentation again or not. Generally speaking, we don't revise old documents very often. But, when we improve some features and when the old descriptions do not fit to the new behavior, we will revise the contents (and the document date should reflect that). For this reason, the documentation and the particular version of XXCOPY program files should be in sync even in the web site. Therefore, the "official" release page and the betatest release page are different. http://www.xxcopy.com http://www.xxcopy.com/betatest/ The both pages looks deceptively the same. But, some of the technical bulletin pages in the respective version may be different. It is up to you to re-read everything (just to keep refreshed). But, that is probably not necessary. The summary section may reduce the amount of reading. For nearly all releases, the revision history page (XXTB #99) describes the difference in a very terse fashion. >QUESTION THREE: > >I maintain a data base of a couple of mail lists I am interested in using >a product "ForKeeps" I would like to download the last 50 or 100 messages >from your data base. Do you have such a provision to allow a series of >messages by number available? I don't know if there's any convenient ways to manage old messages. We simply use Yahoo's group and I'm not aware of any provision for any easy and convenient retrieval mechanisms of archived messages. Since I do not throw away Emails that I receive (except, of course junk emails), I do have pretty much all of previous messages that have appeared in the XXCOPY discussion group. Unfortunately, the Emails that are delivered to subscribers do not seem to contain the message serial number. On the other hand, the archived message which can be accessed by the message number on-line remove some spacing info from the text. That is, all the indentation will be lost and sometimes makes the message not as easy to read. The reason why we still like Yahoo's service for this purpose is that the archived messages are not only available to us, the members, but also are incorporated in Google's general search engine database which allows non-members to find their solution in our discussion group archive. I hope I gave you answers you were looking for. Kan Yabumoto =========================================================== >Many thanks. > >D G Connett >dgconnett@e... > Yahoo!
