Yes, I have this experience too (and I use XP Pro and Win98SE on the linked machines). Since my laptop is not on all the time (until I want to backup to it), XP shows it disconnected (quite properly). So I have to go to the drive list and doubleclick for it to inform the LAN that it's available. If I try to run the XXCOPY .bat job before doing that, the drive letter I mapped for the laptop appears not to exist. Apparently just trying to access the drive letter isn't enough to make the DOS window go see if the drive is present. I'm thinking this is standard Windows behavior.
