Hi, All: Nobody likes the junk Emails that pollutes the Internet world. I'm all for tougher laws criminalizing such acts. As to the current crop of the junkmails that come to the subscribers (the one that David mentioned), it is probably done by an individual who took the trouble of automating the registration. The prankster first obtain a free Email address from @yahoo.com (always a randomly chosen string of 12 letters), and register to our group as a member, then, post the junk mail to "reach out" to some few hundred subscribing members. It is quite pathetic. What I've been doing as a moderator was to enable the new-member notification mechanism that I receive Emails for new member registration as well as membership cancellation. I keep eye on the new ones with suspicious Email names (so far the only one is with 12-letter @yahoo.com, but I expect the scheme will get more variety in the future). Usually, I kick out such an intruder from the membership before it posts a junk mail to the group. For some reason, I found there is a substantial delay between its registration as a new member and posting its first junk message. Normally, I will act on time. But, if I overlook or do not act promptly, you will see the junk mail. Still, as soon as I recognize such a mail, I remove the junk message from the archived list and kick out the offending member. All of this process is by hand. I get just a few notifications from Yahoo for new members come and go. And, I'm vigilant in checking the email address, counting the number of letters (12 is the magic number so far) if it is @yahoo.com, and make a subjective judgement whether the name is sufficiently "random". So far, most of them had just too awkward combinations of consonant letters for human to choose. wtufgbvajqls@y... This was easy, I removed it two days ago. But, some are a bit harder to judge; rvcdboklankr@y... This was a bit closer to manmade name but I zapped this. Anyway, I just wanted you to know I'm doing all I can on this issue. It may be a matter of time before I will have to make the membership to be one-notch tighter than what it already is; that a new member will become eligible to post a message only after his membership is approved by me (the moderator). This loses immediacy of new member being able to post his first message. My advice to all is that just ignore them and do not increase any traffic by making any discussion of this subject (that are also "noise" to our discussion group). Still, I consider the few thousand archived messages in this group (which is searchable by keywords) is our assets.
