You should investigate the use of ARJ for this. It can combine the selection an compression into one step, allows for complete verification of the accuracy of the backup, and can even chop it up into pieces for storage off line (such as floppies) if desired. It has more switches and combinations than xxcopy !!! :-) It can also preserve generations. IIRC the URL is . It may not need the www.
