I have repeated this several times. Apparently, this is a losing battle. We borrowed Linux's version number system to differentiate the stable release versions from less tested (possibly less stable) versions using the 2nd digit of the version number. We use an odd numbered 2nd digit in the version number for beta versions. To test one version number to another for chronological order, you need to subtract one from the second digit if it is an odd value. After normalizing the value, you may compare the two value and the larger the number, the newer the version is. We thought this scheme was neat and had advantage in telling which is which. But, it is not very intuitive and the place we mention the numbering scheme is not often viewed by most people. So, we are pretty much giving up with the numbering scheme. V. 2.92.6 is equivalent to 2.82.6 except it is a beta version.
