Melissa: Thank you for your report. Based upon our preliminary investigation, the problem of the "Invalid source directory" may be something to do with the Windows system not being able to characterize the type of volume on a remote computer. So far, we observed strange behavior in Win9X which fails to perform some Win32 API function until a directory on the target volume is accessed at least once before the attempt to determine the volume type. This tentative conclusion is based upon our observation that XXCOPY's access to a remote volume fails on its first attempt to do so. If you run a simple volume access such as the following command just once, DIR \\remote_server\resource\abc then, the Win9X system has no problem characterizing the destination volume. So, for now, if you run a command similar to the above, XXCOPY will have no problem. Our tentative conclusion is that Win9X may have a minor bug which fails to determine the volume type (e.g., hard disk, CD-ROM, floppy disk, remote disk, etc.) in a remote storage device. Interestingly, we don't observe the same thing in the XP environment. Our debugging procedure is frustratingly slow because once the target volume is "accessed" by a simple program such as DIR, the problem disappear. The reason some earlier versions of XXCOPY didn't see the problem may be that we have been just lucky by accessing the remote volume before XXCOPY attempts to determine what type of storage device the directory is. Boy, all kinds of funny situations are happening all over the place.
