Last access is generally considered to be reading the file but as Kan has pointed out previously, it is so unreliable as to be virtually useless. Depending on the OS, copying a file will change the last access time and it can be changed by something as trivial as viewing the file properties e.g. the last access time displayed by explorer under NT is always the current time. Certainly carrying out a backup could be responsible for changing the last access time. In reality, you can only use the last modified time as a reliable test and try as best you can to exclude static files which are accessed regularly but don't change. Garry
