Hi, all: I have just posted a (hidden) technical bulletin page which summarize this work. http://www.xxcopy.com/xxcopy80.htm It's a work in progress. ---------------------------------------------------- I have a question someone may know the answer: I've been busy working on a little side project which involves creating a "Parallel Install of XP" (That's Microsoft's term to install 2nd set of XP on the same machine). This is one technique that eventually allows a complete cloning of an XP to another drive. There are a few ways to accomplish this. I have tried many different schemes (during the past 72 hours, I have rebooted one of my test systems probably over 100 times...).=20 1. Install a complete XP from the Install CD (the most time-consuming) 2. Disk Image the whole drive into another drive (basically this is what Ghost does). 3. Replicate the C:\Windows\ directory into the parallel install directory (C:\Windows.ALT\). (in this case, you need to somehow copy the registry files at c:\windows\system32\config\). The third method takes the least amount of time and works. ----------------------------------------------------- Don't try it just yet because if you install a second set using this scheme, you need to worry about a few key files (e.g., HIBERFIL.SYS) which should not collide with the main windows. I'm writing an interesting technical bulletin based on my recent research. ----------------------------------------------------- I've been working on the 3rd method which is by far the best. Then, it occurred to me that there are a lot of files that are not needed for the minimalistic (2nd) install. To me, if the alternate boot will give us a basic windows environment with file-copy, browse, network-connection, we don't even need Internet Explorer and Email capability which consume a lot of disk space. If you install a minimum system, the \Windows directory for XP is about 650 MB. After many trials and errors, the latest version is less than 300 MB. I'm guessing that I can further cut it down to 200 MB or so. The trouble is the \Windows\system32\ directory where over 1000 DLL files are stored. I imagine at least half of them are for special applications and most people don't need them for a minimum system. E.g., ODBC*.DLL are for ODBC (Open Database Connectivity) related feature which we don't need. Similarly, there are a lot of keyboard support files but only one which matches your keyboard is needed. The trouble is there are just too many of them. So, I started to search for some DLL on the web. I figured if I need it, someone else must have felt the same way. I'm looking for a list of DLLs with a short description of what they are for. Now, I feel it is a gross omission by Microsoft. I believe they should have a list of what each files are for. I'm not aware of any such list published by Microsoft. But, someone must have compiled a list of DLLs that come with the XP (and for other versions of Windows as well). Does anyone know web sites for this?=20=20 My trials and errors with guesswork have been very time-consuming. So, I decided to ask and take a short break...
