Just wanted to add another note here. By default, xdelta creates an md5 check sum of the original file. When the second file is patched, xdelta checks the md5 hash of the output file to determine if it matches the original file. Therefore, xdelta will know itself if it failed or not. Naturally, if you are still concerned, you can verify the md5 independent of xdelta to make sure everything is working OK. There are win32 versions of md5 available if you need one.
