Since you mentioned alternative drives, I'd like to point out firewire 
drives as well. While they are not as available as USB and you need a 
firewire port in your PC, they are another option. Here is a summary 
of the performance differences between USB and FireWire.

USB 1.1 - 12 Mpbs
FireWire 400 - 400 Mbps
USB 2.0 - 480 Mbps
FireWire 800 - 800 Mbps

From this information, you can clearly see why Kan is correct that it 
is worth $20 to buy a USB 2.0 card!
