Thank you for your help. That must have been the problem, the backslash 
immediately preceding the exclusion file. I did not have it. Now I am 
running in to a different problem. How do I exclude all files of a given 
syntax, regardless of the directory they are in? I am not getting errors, 
but the files I want to exclude are not being excluded. Here is the contents 
of my exclude file:

/X
/X
/X
/X
/X

I also tried it without the c:\*\ business in there. Same problem.
