Do you have ECC memory installed and enabled? If not, the above
could well have been the result of a cosmic ray flipping the
appropriate bit. This would not be a hardware fault, nor
repeatable.

If I am right about this particular episode, it just illustrates
how foolish the false economy of buying non-ECC memory is. You
were lucky then, but next time ....?
