(As I repeated million times, whenever a problem of any kind is being discussed, it is always a very good idea to include which Windows version you are running ---- here, you force me to waste my (and everyone else's time) if my assumption is wrong. --- the command line should have been helpful.) Also, when you encounter failed copy, you should not let it go unchecked. You should always put some effort to find out which ones failed and see if any pattern emerges. Usually, always the same set of files fail. Based upon my very bold assumption that Jim is running the following command on an XP system: xxcopy c:\ d:\ /CLONE It is very common to see the following files to fail: c:\windows\system32\config\system c:\windows\system32\config\software c:\windows\system32\config\sam c:\windows\system32\config\security c:\windows\system32\config\default c:\Documents and Settings\\ntuser.dat c:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\ntuser.dat c:\Documents and Settings\NetworkService\ntuser.dat c:\Documents and Settings\\\UsrClass.dat c:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\\UsrClass.dat c:\Documents and Settings\NetworkService\\UsrClass.dat Plus there log file (append .log to each of the above files). where =3D the current user's name =3D Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows\ The grand total of the above is 22 files. I'm not sure if you will have more files that cannot be copied in win XP. If you carefully examine the above, a very clear picture emerges. That is *ALL* of the failed files are components to the system registry!!! In case of Win98SE, there were two major files for the system registry (SYSTEM.DAT and USERS.DAT) --- with Win ME there were one or two more. Here with XP, the system registry is broken down into even more pieces and the user-specific portions of the system registry info are spread into different directories. (this point is not immediately apparent to a casual observer since they are spread over "unexpected" areas). If you know that certain files besides the files listed above consistently fail to be copied, please let me know which ones. Kan Yabumoto =20=20
