Subject  :  Clone-ing drive C: with only one OS?

For the past 4 weeks and some 40 hours on my PC I have been trying to backup/copy a complete partition to another drive using the "Lexun Backup Solution" to no avail. I've given up.
However one thing that he and partitionMagic specify is one cannot backup a copy of an OS while that OS is the active OS. One must install another OS and make it active.
How does XXCOPY get around this requirement?
Once this is answered I have more questions.
