Kan if my memory is right the standard install on Win98 formats the hard drive. If the user doesn't know how to do a custon install he is going to loose everything. A lot of home users work with one hard drive and have no way to backup there hard drives to another drive. In this fellows case he may have a second PC but he may or may not have room to do a good backup. Some folks are better off seeking aid from an advanced user in situations like his. --- Kan Yabumoto wrote: > > Jonah wrote: > > >my win 98se drive is gone. it won't boot, HOWEVER > the dir can be read > >via the 'dos' bootup disc i downloaded. > > > >i have a win 98 old computer that runs fine. > > > >so i attached the old drive to 2nd ide port and > booted in safe mode. > >when you touch the 'new'/busted drive the computer > freezes. so i > >thought xxcopy would allow me to pull some of my > doc/files off that i > >need. > > > >i even made the xxcopy16 boot disc you recommend, > but still i can't > >get myself into a proper dos enviornment. the win > 98 window just sitd > >there trying to boot. althought the little blue > wave at the bottom > >keeps moving.... > > > >any thoughts? > >jonah > > Apparently, some files (probably the system registry > file > (c:\windows\system.dat) is corrupted. > > You should have made a bootable clone following the > /CLONE article: > > http://www.xxcopy.com/clone > > Now, it's too late.
