My boards won't run a USB disk in safe mode which usually provides faster cloning for IDE connected disks. My "transient" comment was unhelpful but was triggered by memories of a spell when I had an intermittent PSU which caused multiple copy fails and several consequential re-clones before final success. USB connectors may also make an intermittent connection but neither of these causes seems relevant here. > > I think I would have > > booted the new drive and then tried to copy and verify data > > from the old > > How, without first placing /something/ on the new drive to boot > into? I hesitated to suggest Kan's Quick Boot or minimal windows approaches since this is a simple and robust /clone operation. I've used USB cloning successfully on two desktop machines, albeit with the same disk in a USB2 external enclosure (on USB1). I have never used /MBR on a USB connected disk. Apart from starting again with an EBD and preparing the (clean) new disk on the old disks IDE connection before USB cloning, I'm stumped. Bob
