Merril, and All, I've hesitated posting all this 'competition' to xxcopy on it's own forum. But as an incentive to get Kan to included this badly need feature, here goes nothing. Actually, I use the Paragon Partition Explorer (Windows version) which will Export (not Copy) the Open/Locked/Whatever system files with Win32 running. But then only to an intermediate location, not the destination Windows\system32\config\ location! This is one component of the Paragon Disk Manager Package, which also includes DOS versions of Partiton Explorer, Disk Backup, and Partition Manager for starters. For Drive or Partition Copies, etc., the Window's version of these modules, when encountering a partition with Open or Running Components, boots to a pseudo Welcome Screen and execute Scripts (surprise!), than re-boots Windows. Summary, Win32 is shut down for the transfer. And just for the record, they have a new product Mount Anything, with is a set of FAT\NTFS to Ext2 \3, and visa-versa, drivers. (An 'Expert' told me just the other day this couldn't be done!) http://www.paragon-gmbh.com/ I use D-Copy for maintenance of my backup drive. The very reason I'm looking at xxcopy is, it Will Not copy the XP registry components (as it went out of support prior to the XP file naming convention). Just for the record, what it can do is force NT Hives (.dat) files. This is accomplished by looking up the 'stubborn' files in the registry (HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\HiveList in XP, thanks to Garry Deane.), and if found it then copies out the loaded data creating a New copy. This 'appears' to be what ERUNT does as well? And xxcopy(32) can copy the .dat format in Win98 for instance (but these are simply Read Only I believe). I'm quite partial to D-Copy simply because I'm familiar with it. It's a Win32 interface (but can be run from the command line) that builds a Differences List (including items for Deletion on the Destination, no longer on the Source) based on Size, Date\Time, and Attributes. One of the major points is this list is compiled for examination prior to any execution. I haven't used xxcopy beyond determining it can't do the registry files in XP either, so I don't know if it will list like this? Let me explain what I'm doing, as I see all kinds of "backups" mentioned, but never the 'ultimate' backup (in my oppinion!). 2 drives, of 6 partitons each. Drive 0 is C: thru H:, and Drive 1 is I: thru N:. Drive 1 is an Image drive 0, a backup for restoration purposes. The intention here is to keep the OS partition as small as possible within reason. It's currently at 2.6GB, and will restore from backup as a partition copy (data only) in under 5min. This allows certain 'dumb-ass' exploration privilages. In that by the time you can get back with a cup of coffee, that last mistake is rectified (without even having to guess what it was). However, it is convient to be able to Boot the Backup on occasion. (See my xxcopy forum post #5184 of 07/30/2003.) So, for my purposes it is necessary to be able to "xxclone" in both directions if you will, Image to Bootable and Back Again. Are you reading this Kan? What an opportunity to get All the necessary components into one package. Copying files is One part, and you've got that one! Copying Locked\Open files is the second (please!). But don't forget the (actually quite simple) Drive Letter Assignment to Physical Drive maniplation. DES
