What is the real difference between these utilities? I am replacing a W98 laptop drive, and I have already tried the xcopy method. I wanted to have an extra partition for linux, so I plugged my old laptop drive into an XP tower box (via an adaptor), xfered the image to the XP drive with xcopy and swapped in the new drive, made 3 partitions, formated two, and repeated the xfer. No boot. I found I had to go back and xfer the system_sav partition too (I thought W98 would automatically recreate this somehow). After all this I had a bootable disk that had some problems - when I tried to launch WORD or EXCEL, they were not found. I am not sure if this was due to copying the system sav at a different time than the main partition (unsynced), or the infamous 8.3 name problem. I have no confidence in the drive image, so here I am. 1) Should I use xxcopy or xxclone? Would I need to boot & run xxcopy from a W98 drive or boot disk, or could I run xxcopy straight from the XP host I am using for the xfer? 2) The site mentions some limitations on network xfers. In the above scenario could I boot my laptop, and xxcopy the old partions to another machine (under either W98 or XP)? This would delay the disassembly of the laptop until after I had a proven good image on the new drive.
