Hi TC, My understanding from your note is that you are trying to transfer a W98 op= erating system from one computer to another. You would not use xxclone for= that because xxclone is only for XP (currently). Xxcopy will transfer a W= 98 operating system although you will need to work through changes in drive= rs etc if you are transferring to another computer. Kan has a very thoroug= h article on the process of cloning W98 using xxcopy, and someone can point= out which article it is or you might see it in the index list at www.xxcop= y.com. Transferring the operating system through a network would apparently requir= e the use of the pro version. The most fundamental difference between xxcopy and xxclone would be that xx= clone's unique functionality is being able to create a bootable backup of a= n XP partition. Xxcopy is the work-horse for the efficient transfer/clonin= g of files and directory structures, with a myriad of control and compariso= n switches. Others can give you more insights. A special help file is ava= ilable. Lots and lots of excellent documentation on Kan's website. =20 Good luck. I am replacing a W98 laptop drive, and I have already tried the xcopy method. I wanted to have an extra partition for linux, so I plugged my old laptop drive into an XP tower box (via an adaptor), xfered the image to the XP drive with xcopy and swapped in the new drive, made 3 partitions, formated two, and repeated the xfer. No boot. I found I had to go back and xfer the system_sav partition too (I thought W98 would automatically recreate this somehow).=20 After all this I had a bootable disk that had some problems - when I tried to launch WORD or EXCEL, they were not found. I am not sure if this was due to copying the system sav at a different time than the main partition (unsynced), or the infamous 8.3 name problem. I have no confidence in the drive image, so here I am.=20 1) Should I use xxcopy or xxclone? Would I need to boot & run xxcopy from a W98 drive or boot disk, or could I run xxcopy straight from the XP host I am using for the xfer?=20=20 =20=20=20 2) The site mentions some limitations on network xfers. In the above scenario could I boot my laptop, and xxcopy the old partions to another machine (under either W98 or XP)? This would delay the disassembly of the laptop until after I had a proven good image on the new drive. =20=20=20 Yahoo!
