However since my primary computer is a laptop running XP Pro, and since and I regularly back it up to an external hard drive (in addition to CDs and DVDs) I'll throw in my 2 cents worth. The backups I currently make are not bootable. My primary concern is to save copies of my data, and xxcopy does that very nicely for me. However eventually I would also like to make my external drive (mine is a USB port drive) bootable and there has been some recent discussion about xxclone possibly doing that. However I believe it depends upon the bios of each individual computer, and I have to admit I have not yet checked the bios in this machine to see if it is capable of booting to a USB port drive. I do plan to check into that in the near future, and if it supports it, I'm going to give xxclone a try and see how it works. Perhaps your problem, since it mirrors my own situation, will motivate me to move on this a little faster. John
