Thanks very much for your swift reply. xxcopy seemed to be so powerful that it is a great surprise to me that it doesn't have such an obvious feature that even DOS xcopy had! I'm trying to copy a file to a date-stamped filename. Over time a series of date-stamped copies of the file from at different times will build up. It's part of a backup strategy. I may have to copy the file somewhere then rename. Thanks, Peter Garry Deane wrote: --- In xxcopy@yahoogroups.com, "peterdavidinnes" wrote: > > If I were to type > > xcopy filename new_filename > > where new_filename does not already exist I get the message > > Does new_filename specify a file name > or directory name on the target > (F = file, D = directory) > > This allows me to either copy the file to a new file with a > different name in the same directory or to a new directory. > > However, with xxcopy it does not offer this option and assumes > new_filename is a directory. > > I want to create a new filename in the same directory using > xxcopy. The destination is always considered to be a directory and you can't change this. However there are 2 command groups (/SGx and /SL/SX/SR) that do some special renaming operations. Depending on what you are trying to do, you may be able to use these to accomplish the task. Post again with the specifics (including OS) of what you want to do and we might be able to help. Alternately, there are plenty of file renaming programs freely available that will almost certainly do what you want. Garry Yahoo!
