The common theme has been that this occurred when there are a very large number of files in one directory (i.e. > 10,000). The suggestion has been to use /nx0 to disable short name preservation which has a punishing overhead when dealing with very large numbers of files. There hasn't been any feed back to this group whether /nx0 solved the problem but it's worth trying. Note that to continue the copying from where it left off without re-copying previously copied files, you can use: xxcopy e:\ h:\backup\E_Drive /backup Garry
