The problem was that I didn't use quotes. As usual a simple error is missed! It all works fine now. I find using quotes in batch files a bit confusing because SET doesn't seem to want them but xxcopy does! I've also got another backup routine for backing up to CDR using WinZip to compress the files and I use basically the same exclude list. In this case the syntax of the exclude files is again different so unfortunately I have to duplicate this list in 2 slightly different ways - something which programmers dislike as inelegant and prone to error (I used to be one a few years ago - albeit amateur)! However your suggestions about how to specify the files in the exclude list allow me to make the 2 versions almost identical. All the suggestions are much appreciated and most are now included in my updated batch file. Thanks. (For anyone else copying this there's a small typo in the xxcopy command line - need OPTS not OPS). If anyone's interested I could post an updated (and more complete) version here. Also I don't have a licensed copy of xxcopy and it doesn't like me using /oX2 (or /oE2 or /oS2) as it says this is primarily for users with a corporate site licence. This forces me to press a key, which is a bind, but at least it works to debug things. However I don't mind missing these options out as the log file seems to contain everything I want. I would however like to suppress screen output of all the files copied as this is just a blur of useless information, but I haven't found a way to do this with the free version. Also to Virg, thanks for the response. The exclusion list doesn't include xxcopy - it's just the way the word wrapping in Yahoo has confused things. The reason I use "exclude xxcopy.txt" is that I also maintain a file called "exclude WinZip.txt" for the reasons mentioned above. Russell
