Most of us only want to copy a sub-set of all the files that might exist in a directory tree or volume. For example, typically you might want the files in "C:\Documents and Settings\*\" but not the files in printhood\, cookies\, recent\ etc. At the moment, the ways available are to use: 1. multiple xxcopy commands with each directory you want copied given as the source 2. /X/X etc. to exclude the directories you don't want 3. /IN to select just *.doc, *.xls etc files (but you can't specify a directory path). Although this is workable, there are lots of cases where it becomes cumbersome. This is particularly so with method 1 when you want to keep a log of the operation. It becomes even more cumbersome when the source files are scattered across different branches of the directory tree. It would be much simpler to be able to specify multiple source paths in an inclusion file (or expand the scope of the /IN switch) e.g. xxcopy c:\ d:\mydata\ /IN@: :: Source files "C:\Documents and Settings\Garry\My Documents\" "C:\Documents and Settings\Fred\My Documents\" "C:\Program Files\Eudora\*\*.mbx\" "C:\Program Files\Eudora\*\*.toc\" This is just a simple example but I hope you get the idea. With both inclusion and exclusion files, you could select whether it is better to specify a source with a few exclusions or if there are lots of exclusions, specify a few inclusion source specs instead. At the moment with some of my backup schemes, I use quite complex batch files to dynamically build an exclusion file so that I can copy data directories which match a few simple but dissimilar patterns i.e. I create an exclusion file which matches everything except the directories that I want to copy. Although this works, it is far from obvious which makes it hard to maintain. Garry
