TIA > > Malcolm > Let me try to make a point that it sounds like you may be missing? Originally your OS was installed to C:. If you Cloned it (whatever) and made a bootable copy, say on G:. When that copy boots, at least if it boots, the drive that was originally G: IS NOW C:. The installed OS will only run on a drive that is lettered identically to that it was installed on. You may be becoming further confounded by the fact that any data on D: used in startup of C: gets further confused as a copy of D:, on H:(?), probably isn't being used (unless you've relettered these drives manually)? This concept is quite different that than OS's before NTFS where drive lettering was set by the System it's self depending on the order partitions were encountered during boot. Exactly how this drive relettering (and volume relabling) is accomplished is felt (by Pixi Labs) to be "too complicated for the average user". Unfortunately for me, since I was doing it before there was an XXClone, it was necessary to figure it out. (And since I'm really not all that smart, I feel it follows that it can't actually be too complicated?) You can see "where" the info is at HKLM\System\Mounted Devices\. Details of massaging it without xxclone, while straightforward, are somewhat lengthy, but can be provided if you're interested. But the point is, understanding that booting a "copy" requires the copy be seen, drive letter wise, as the original (and hence what was the original must then become the copy!). Some apps are even coded to the VolumeID as well; Zone Alarm Pro, NetZero, and the Office Icons at least, that I know of. DES
