I've developed my own understanding & method, that appears much eaiser (to me!). Let's see if I can condense it while maintaining the meat... Exporting the original key & editing that down to only what's necessary (beware line wraps). I must explain that I have 3 disks of 6 partitions each. C:-H: is Disk 0 and I:-N: is Disk 1, etc. In actuality I'm swapping 6 Drive letters (& Volume Labels) at a time: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices] "\\DosDevices\\C:"=hex:fc,3e,85,23,00,7e,00,00,00,00,00,00 "\\??\\Volume{6c365e5b-56d1-11d7-abd4- 806d6172696f}"=hex:fc,3e,85,23,00,7e,00,\ 00,00,00,00,00 "\\DosDevices\\I:"=hex:64,89,33,91,00,7e,00,00,00,00,00,00 "\\??\\Volume{6c365e61-56d1-11d7-abd4- 806d6172696f}"=hex:64,89,33,91,00,7e,00,\ 00,00,00,00,00 OK, Editing this original file into what I call Boot2.reg: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Loaded Dat\MountedDevices] "\\DosDevices\\C:"=hex:64,89,33,91,00,7e,00,00,00,00,00,00 "\\??\\Volume{6c365e5b-56d1-11d7-abd4- 806d6172696f}"=hex:64,89,33,91,00,7e,00,\ 00,00,00,00,00 "\\DosDevices\\I:"=hex:fc,3e,85,23,00,7e,00,00,00,00,00,00 "\\??\\Volume{6c365e61-56d1-11d7-abd4- 806d6172696f}"=hex:fc,3e,85,23,00,7e,00,\ 00,00,00,00,00 This swaps C: and it's Volume Label with I: and it's Volume Label. Now, in RegEdit, Load the System Hive from the copy on I: (I:\Windows\System32\config\System) into the running registry (at HKLM) as the false key Loaded Dat. (This particular name only has signifigance as I actually purchased a Registry Tool that uses it by default before finding out the Load Hive feature was built in!) Import (or Merge) the above Boot2.reg file, and Unload the Loaded Dat Hive. You've just swapped C: & I:, in the copy on I:. Without presenting any danger to the running registry may I add. The False Key would simply be lost if a shutdown occured while it was loaded. You edited the registry OK, but not any part of the operating registry. I find this technique particularly sastifying as I keep copies of the System files involved as both image and bootable allowing a 1 file copy to make any OS copy (and it's attendant data partitions) either Bootable, or Image for restoration purposes. This 3 way arrangement always allows any operation between 2 copies, while running the 3rd. If you can keep it all straight! DES
