My only experience of a similar nature was in fact a failing actuator motor which was making the clicking noise. That was a 'for real' failure and the HDD needed to be replaced. Since you now have an apparently working original disk, I'd suggest continuing with that and leave your son's disk in place as a backup. Xxclone (with Xxcopy if you want extra control) can be used in a batch file to automatically keep your cloned backup fresh and up to date as and when required. If your existing HDD does die, just swap in the backup. > And I do of MS Office Pro 2003. Do I have to reinstall > the whole program? However note: 1. If you keep your son's disk as a spare (as opposed to it replacing your HDD), then you don't want to change the disk ID i.e. you definitely don't want 2 HDD's with the same serial number. 2. It may or may not be necessary to change the volume serial number. You'd need to test the cloned disk running by itself to see if there are any problems. One minor problem can occur with the desktop/start menu shortcuts not working but these can easily be fixed by creating new shortcuts. A more serious problem relating to keeping the setup files on the HDD was reported (I don't remember the full details) but this wouldn't affect too many people. Of course you may have other software that is affected so it's a matter of test it and see. Garry
