XC20434 > > > > > > snip < My mention of Creative was in regard to their Sound stuff which is their speciality. I have one of their Platinum Audigy2 systems. And personally found their installation procedures to be confusing at best. Initially ABS, the manufacture of this computer, recommended not even installing anything but the drivers as they said there was a conflict between the Creative software and the ATI graphics drivers. So I tried anyway and was rewarded by having to reload Windows and everything else from scratch. I found the Creative Support to be less than worthless. Following their recomendations would be to guarantee screwing up your computer much worse than it ever was before seeking their assistance. After waiting months, and struggling through I finally managing to get their many seperate modules installed. By sneaking it on one item at a time. Creative updates work this way you see, you have have the original installed, whether it works or not, or even if it's screwing up your computer, to be able to update it! I must admit though when finally working it's all farily nice. But huge, complicated, and still not bug free. The speakers will just up and POP loudly for no known reason, scaring the hell out of me whan I'm quitely working. And now with SP2 the machine won't restore from hibernation more than a couple of times in a row without crashing on restart and the sound reverting from 6.1 to 2.1 all by it's self. And Zone Alarm Pro forgetting it's alerts... so it's very hard to say who's at fault here. But forcing me to abandon hibernation where I used to be able to go weeks without re-booting. Since SP2 the trouble cycle has stared over again. Calling for more months of updates by everyone, resolving this and that. There have been several updates to the ATI graphics drivers over that period as well, so who actually finally eliminated the original confict is unknown? Aside, the last ATI graphics update included a new control panel which required the Microsoft.NET framework. Like a fool I tried it. And after a couple of days I then spent another couple of days getting rid of it. It would have been much easier to just restore the OS partition but no I took it as a personal challenge and learning experience to manually undo everything that .NET had wrapped it's tentacles around. You have no idea! This may be the direction of the future but personally I shall postpone that move as long as possible. The moral of this story is, be careful what you wish for. An old engineering premise is, "Your most reliable piece of hardware is the one you don't have." And this most especially applies to software. My "old" computer has run from 1998 on integrated graphics, with no updates and more importantly no trouble. But no, I had to step up to Fancy. Which I now equate with Complicated and Trouble Guaranteed. DES
