Indeed, and I appreciate the thought. But the little buggers actually serve a purpose here in XP. I was pointing out yet another problem with synchronization. The thumbnails are part of my backups, and are included there. But don't exist in W98 and are not included in synchronizing across the LAN. Duplicating how just now... if I look in My Documents\My Pictures\Somewhere\ via My Network Places, XP shows thumbnails on the Folders over there. And it does it by actually placing a Thumbs.db file in each remote folder. Even on an operating system that doesn't use these files. Just for it's own display purposes I suppose. This is bad enough. But what's worse is apparently xxcopy doesn't have a way to detect the fact. (I should be careful here as xxcopy covers a Lot of ground! I should say, "I don't see a way.") And that was the point. If\when one of the Thumbs.db's does get transferred the only way xxcopy can find it is if\when the original becomes modified allowing the unintended copy to be Marked for Copy hence identifying it for Removal. (I think I'm beginning to get this!) Until this I actually thought I had a good handle on Synchronization. Understanding all the possible situations of handling Orphan files, etc. But this represents a case of Source Orphans you want to remain just that. Don't copy, but if they somehow do get copied, then delete. Make any sense? It is a database file containing the small images displayed when you view a folder in "thumbnail" view (as opposed to tile, icon, list, or detail view). No harm is done by deleting thumbs.db files. There is no need to include them in your system backups. Whether you see these files or not is a function of your File Options settings. > > To turn off this feature and save a bit of disk space, > > Click the Start button > Select Control Panel > Select Folder Options > Click the View tab > Check "Do not cache thumbnails" > Click the OK button > > > > > > > --- In xxcopy@yahoogroups.com, "des4212001" wrote: > > > > I'm mostly talking to myself here to see if something registers. > > Here's another synchronization problem... they never end.
