Prior to SP2 I had 40 uninstallable Windows updates, $NTUninstallKBxxxxxx$'s including 24 KBxxxxxx.log files and 21 Qxxxxxx.log files. All of which is "supposd" to be included in SP2. Moved all that out to my Archive\Window's Patches\Prior to SP2\. Then came SP2 with $NTServicePackUninstall$. And since then 15 more $NTUninstallKBxxxxxx's (& KBxxxxxx.log's). Not to mention the $hf_mig$ folder containing 14 downloaded installation packages (1 of the uninstalls is for a hot fix that apparently there was no download for!). Before I forget, there was 8 numerically coded folders in C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download\ that appeared to be the result of letting the Security Center download the last lot? I got tired of waiting for something to happen and got it myself. Moved all that out to the Archive\Window's Patches\. Boring you with the details, all this represents 576 MB (401 MB compressed), 3,350 files in 206 folders. Or, it's no wonder Windows gags eventually. Oh, and while doinking with this I found 2 M$ installation packages in C:\Windows\Downloaded Installations\ from running installers which I have stored in & run from my own location. Window's is just trying to do me a favor keeping another copy I suppose? A trivial 6 MB! All the Uninstall stuff can be dumped I'm sure, after a grace period to determine if anything bad has resulted (and providing you can figure out which did what!). Especially that prior to SP2. And if after installing SP2 and you're still running... you might uninstall it just for fun... Right! The $hf_mig$ folder will reappear with more contents after next Patch Tuesday I'm sure. OK, there's another mother load in C:\Windows\Installer\, nearly 100 MB for me. The numerically coded (classID?) folders bother me. Some of the numbered installation packages are obviously junk, much like the installation packages left in the C:\Windows\Downloaded Installations\ above. There are even a few .MST files (logs of whatever?) of 0 bytes that have to be junk. Any inputs on this speciffically before I start experimenting? And any more known Windows Crap ripe for removal? I know about Prefetch, but that's relatively small for me as I'll purge it ocationally. DES
